Chronic Sinusitis: Diagnosis and Treatment
Diagnosis – To diagnose chronic sinusitis, a healthcare provider may:
- Physical Exam: This may involve checking for tenderness in the face and nose and examining the inside of the nose.
- Nasal Endoscopy: A thin, flexible tube with a light is inserted into the nose to visualize the sinuses.
- Imaging Tests: CT or MRI scans can provide detailed images of the sinuses and nasal area to identify potential causes.
- Nasal and Sinus Samples: In some cases, tissue samples may be taken from the nose or sinuses for laboratory analysis to determine the underlying cause, especially if treatment is ineffective or symptoms worsen.
- Allergy Testing: If allergies are suspected as a contributing factor, allergy skin tests may be performed to identify specific allergens.
